The Israel China Institute has made great strides since its establishment in 2009.
Its website was launched in April 2010. Two branches were inaugurated in Jerusalem and Jinan city (Shandong Province). Its China management team was constituted and began operating several Israel – China cooperative initiatives. ICI is in negotiation to establish other branches in provinces and cities throughout China and in Israel. ICI is cooperating with Chinese, Israeli and Jewish organizations and foundations, media groups, educational institutes, international chambers of commerce, professional associations, government and statutory authorities, consulting, law and investment firms and other companies to advance its agenda of enhancing Israel-China relations. Some of these include: the local governments of Jinan, Shouguang, Binzhou, Heze, Yantai (Shandong Province); the Dazhong Rural Daily; the Investment Promotion Center of Zhejiang; the Shandong Academy of Modern Agricultural Sciences; Israel Export Institute; the Israel Trade Institute; the Israel Embassy in China; International Cooperation (MASHAV), Science & Agriculture Attaché at the Israeli Embassy in Beijing; the Israel Chamber of Commerce in China; the Israel Bi National Chamber of Commerce and Trade; Salans International Law firm; Confucian Business Group, Jinan, LTD, Shandong University's Center for Judaic and Inter Religious Studies; Yingcai University, Weifang University of Science and Technology and many others. ICI's strategic relationship with Dazhong Rural Daily was an important development in its PR capacities in China. Together with 12 journals, technical publications and a website, the media group is the oldest, most influential and most important media organ of the National and Provincial Communist Party. It is expected that the cooperation will enhance the profile of Israel's technology and agricultural innovation reputation, and pave the way for greater cooperation in the rural areas of China. ICI director hosted (former) Rector of Hebrew University and (former) Dean of the department of Agriculture, Professor Haim Rabinowitch to visit Shandong University, attend the Center for Judaic and Inter Religious Studies Summer School in Jewish Studies and the Qingdao University Forum on Agricultural. ICI Director, Avrum Ehrlich led a delegation from Yingcai University to Israel, visiting the Hebrew University's Department of Agriculture in Rehovot; the Volcani Institute for experimental research in agriculture; the Israeli Ministry of Agriculture in Beit Dagan; Hebrew University's technology transfer company, Yissum, in Jerusalem. Ideas born during meetings have culminated in ICI's co –hosting of the the Israel-Shandong Agriculture and Technology Forum, July 5-6, 2010. The Israel-China Institute hosted an Israeli delegation at the Shandong Machinery and Industry Trade Fair in March 2010. ICI director, Prof. Avrum Ehrlich introduced delegates to the Vice Governor of Shandong; to the President of the China Machine and Industry Association; and to the President of the Shandong Machine and Industry Association, amongst other dignitaries. ICI management were VIP guests at the Shouguang Annual Fruit and Vegetable Exhibition, the largest of its kind in China. Discussions are underway with several cities and regions in Shandong to develop sister city relations with Israeli cities. ICI is in negotiation with rural leaders and local business interests to establish Israel Experimental and Demonstration Farms and hi tech areas in regions around Shandong Province. Together with Confucian Business Group LTD, it is constructing a cooperation and investment models for Israeli – Chinese agricultural cooperation. Israel-China Institute is the co-host of the Israel-Shandong Agriculture and Technology Forum to be held in Jinan City, July 5-6, 2010. The forum will welcome senior leaders of cities, towns, districts and villages from throughout Shandong province and other regions of China, as well as CEOs and investment companies. The forum will be formally opened by the Vice-Governor of Shandong, with the attendance of other senior provincial officials. Israeli diplomatic staff, agriculture, technology and investment firms, chambers of commerce and consulting firms, MBA and farming delegations, are expected to attend. It is envisaged that the forum, and others to follow, will lay the foundations for expanded and diverse Israel cooperation and investment relations in the provinces of China. ICI director, Prof. Avrum Ehrlich continues to teach a course in Jewish mysticism and Jewish history at the Center for Judaic and Inter Religious studies at Shandong University. In addition, regular cultural and educational events are held at the the Israel China Institute's Jinan branch. In 2009 Prof. Ehrlich taught a course at Interdisciplinary Center, Herzelia, Israel, entitled “China in the 21st Century”. On May 16, 2010 he will represent the Chinese position in a simulated Iran Crisis Simulation held at IDC. ICI director led a group to attend the Kaifeng Passover Dinner (Seder) with Jewish descendants in Kaifeng, Henan Province. ICI is promoting economic activity amongst the Kaifeng Jewish descendents as a vehicle for their reconstitution as a sustainable community and has begun negotiating several business prospects for community members. A delegation from the Keifang municipal government was hosted at the Yitzchak Ratzon Strawberry Farm in Heze, on the border between Shandong and Henan provinces, to discuss economic – agriculture initiatives and a strawberry and olive oil project. ICI is working with one of Israel's oldest and most established tour operators www.travex.com to expand business and agriculture tourism and delegations to Israel. ICI is also working with a Chinese ticketing and travel agent to provide tours and delegations of China. ICC has begun publishing in depth research and general publications via the Journal of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies (JAMES) which is designed to provide a platform for a community of experts and scholars to disseminate relevant regional and thematic research, initiatives and ideas relating to China, Asia, the Middle East and Israel. It has re-launched its associated www.israelasiacenter.com website, providing Asia wide context, useful information, links, resources and seminal articles, in Nov 2009. ICI's email list has grown to over 8000 and continues to grow including experts, business and investment concerns, politicians, officials, journalists, scholars and professionals in Israel, ME, Jewish world, China and Asia related fields.
